The California Department of Public Health Office of Vital Records maintains and issues certified copies of death, fetal death, and stillbirth certificates. The California Vital Records Office is managed by the California Department of Health Services. California is a closed records state, so only a select few individuals are allowed access to authorized copies of vital records including the registrant, immediate family members, spouses and legal representatives. However, California does offer the option of obtaining informational copies of death records for the general public. These records contain the same information as an authorized copy; however, the document will state 'Informational, not a valid document to establish identity.'Death records are available from 1905 to present. Requests for vital records can be made by mail, phone, fax, internet, or in-person. However, certified copies of vital records can only be provided by mail or in person.
