Death Certificates are handled by the County Health departments in each county. Death certificates may also be listed in document indexes in the Auditors Office. Records may also be available at the state level depending on the time frame of the record needed. Birth certificates are not public records in Washington; this means that the person making the request must be a member of the immediate family to receive the record. Obtaining a death certificate requires the following information: the state, city and county where the death occurred, the name of the decedent as it appears on the death certificate, and the exact date of the death. Some counties or agencies may also require the decedent's social security number, the name of the funeral home and/or the name of the spouse or parents of the deceased.
