New York marriage records are managed by the Vital Records Section of New York Department of Health for most of the state from 1881 to present. Certified marriage records are available to the bride, groom, those with a documented proper or judicial purpose, and those with a court order. Non certified copies are available to the public if the bride and groom are deceased and the record has been on file for at least 50 years. Marriage records from the Cities of Albany, Buffalo and Yonkers prior to January 1, 1914 are not managed by the Department of Health. Marriage records can be found with City Clerk in the city where the marriage license was filed.
